Orchestra Exchange Concert 2008

Plans for 2009-2010

In addition to our usual series of concerts we expect to undertake at least two exchange concerts.  On October 31st our orchestras will perform at an exchange concert with the fine orchestra from Saratoga High School.  In February we will visit the School of the Arts in San Francisco for an exchange performance and also observe an open rehearsal of the San Francisco Symphony.

For the sixth year in a row the Santa Clara County Office of Education has bestowed the singular honor of inviting our Lynbrook String Quartet to perform at their annual awards evening, this year on October 1st.

Instrumentation

Each year we rely on veteran players to switch to viola and contrabass in order to create the right balance—can you help us out?  Violas, cellos and basses are available for rental through our music boosters, LIMB.  This is a real boon to cellists and bassists because it allows them to keep their private instruments at home.  This opportunity gives experienced players the chanced to stretch out and view the orchestra from a different perspective.  It goes without saying that you can make a substantial difference for which all of us will be very grateful.

Lynbrook is fortunate to have enough string players to offer two separate orchestra classes: String Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra.  Each orchestra rehearses and performs its own separate repertoire and in addition, the two join together, along with a few select wind players from the Wind Ensemble, to perform music written for a large symphonic orchestra.

String orchestra

String Orchestra class is open to all string players who have had at least 2-3 years of formal training.  If you fit that description and you continue to take private lessons during the school year, you should be able to keep up with our challenging repertoire.  This year we will encounter major pieces such as Ernest Bloch’s Concerto Grosso No. 2, Dvorak’s Carneval Overture, Camille Saint-Saens’ Samson and Delilah, and Copland’s Buckaroo Holiday.

Chamber Orchestra

Chamber Orchestra class is by audition only. It is assumed that all players in Chamber Orchestra take private lessons during the school year. For both ensembles, auditions for seating will be held during the first two weeks of school.
